So, what happens to your body when you stop working out? Whether it’s due to a break, illness, or other reasons, understanding the effects of detraining can help you make informed decisions about your fitness journey.

Detraining, also known as deconditioning, occurs when you lose the beneficial effects of training due to an extended rest interval. Just two weeks of detraining can lead to significant declines in your physical fitness as your heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently decreases, there is a reduction in your lean muscle mass and your body’s ability to use carbohydrates for fuel diminishes.

There are certain factors that will affect the extent of fitness loss, such as the length of time you stopped working out. The longer you stay inactive, the greater the impact. Other factors are your genetics, gender and age as an older person may experience faster decline. And lastly, your baseline fitness level, as those who were more fit to begin with may retain some benefits.

The good news is that detraining is reversible once you resume physical activity because your body remembers previous fitness levels, allowing you to regain lost muscle quicker and getting active again gradually will help minimize losses.
